How to Check Your Senior Freeze Status
Check your NJ Senior Freeze (PTR) status online or by phone at 1-800-882-6597 — plus what each status means and the 2026 payment wave dates.
Quick answer
How do I check my Senior Freeze status?
Use the online status inquiry linked from nj.gov/treasury/taxation/ptr with your Social Security number and ZIP code, or call the Senior Freeze hotline at 1-800-882-6597 (weekdays). Payments for the 2025 benefit year are issued in waves — the first went out July 15, 2026— so “processing” before your wave date is normal, not a problem.
Official NJ Division of Taxation site — select the Senior Freeze status inquiry.
Key takeaways
- Check online via the status inquiry at nj.gov/treasury/taxation/ptr, or call 1-800-882-6597 (Senior Freeze hotline) / 1-800-323-4400 (automated, 24/7).
- Payments go out in waves by filing date — filed by May 1 paid from July 15, 2026; later filings pay September 1, November 1, or December 1.
- Your status won’t show a payment date until your wave is actually processed — checking daily doesn’t speed anything up.
- “More information needed” letters are common for first-time filers (base-year verification) — respond quickly, holds don’t clear themselves.
- Filed PAS-1? ANCHOR, Senior Freeze, and Stay NJ each show separate statuses — one can be paid while another is still processing. See PAS-1 status.

Check your status online
Go to the official Senior Freeze page
Open nj.gov/treasury/taxation/ptr and select the online status inquiry. Bookmark the page rather than following links from messages — benefit scam texts target Senior Freeze recipients too.
Enter your identifiers
You’ll need your Social Security number and the ZIP code of your principal residence. Married or civil-union couples: use the SSN listed first on the PAS-1.

The inquiry reports where your application is: received, processing, needs information, approved, or paid — with the payment date and method once issued. Decode each message in the table below.
Check by phone
- Senior Freeze (PTR) hotline: 1-800-882-6597, weekdays during business hours — agents can see your application, explain holds, and update addresses.
- Automated inquiry system (24/7): 1-800-323-4400 — reports status and payment issue dates without an agent.
- General taxation line:609-826-4282 for anything the hotline can’t resolve.
Have your SSN and ZIP code ready. If you’re calling about a specific payment, also note the issue date shown online — agents trace payments from that date.
What each status means
| Status says… | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No record found | No application matches your details — filed very recently, not filed, or the SSN/ZIP don’t match the filing. | Recheck your entries; allow ~2 weeks after filing. Confirm you filed the PAS-1 — the Senior Freeze is never auto-filed. |
| Received / Processing | Normal. Your application is queued for its payment wave. | Compare your filing date to the wave schedule and wait for that date. |
| More information needed | Manual review — most often base-year verification for first-time filers, proof of taxes paid, or an ownership/name mismatch. | Watch your mail and respond with the requested documents promptly. |
| Approved (not yet paid) | Eligible and queued — payment follows in the next wave. | Nothing. The status will show a date once issued. |
| Paid / Issued | Reimbursement sent — direct deposit or check — on the date shown. | Allow a few banking days (deposit) or 2–3 weeks (mail). Then see payment not received. |
| Denied / Adjusted | The state concluded you miss a requirement, or recalculated your amount (income or base-year figures). | A letter explains the reason and appeal window. Many denials are fixable paperwork issues — respond within the stated deadline. |
Filed PAS-1? You have three statuses, not one
The combined PAS-1 application feeds three programs, and each runs on its own track:
- ANCHOR — paid on a rolling basis from about September 2026 (check ANCHOR status)
- Senior Freeze — paid in the waves described above, from July 15, 2026
- Stay NJ — 2025-year installments expected to begin February 2027 (check Stay NJ status)
So receiving one benefit while another still says “processing” is completely normal. The PAS-1 status guide walks through tracking all three.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my Senior Freeze status still say processing after July 15?
July 15, 2026 was only the firstwave — it covered applications filed by about May 1. If you filed later, your payment is scheduled for September 1, November 1, or December 1, 2026, and your status will typically show “processing” until shortly before your wave.
Can I check my Senior Freeze status without a computer?
Yes — call the Senior Freeze hotline at 1-800-882-6597 on weekdays, or the automated system at 1-800-323-4400 any time. Both can report your application and payment status; the hotline can also fix problems.
My ANCHOR was paid but my Senior Freeze wasn't. Is that a problem?
No — the programs pay on different schedules even though you applied once on PAS-1. ANCHOR pays rolling from September; Senior Freeze pays in fixed waves. Worry only if your Senior Freeze status requests information or your wave date has clearly passed — then see payment not received.
Does the Senior Freeze status tool show my payment amount?
Once your claim is approved and paid, the status shows the issue date and payment method, and the amount appears on the payment itself. To estimate the amount in advance, subtract your base-year taxes from this year’s taxes — or use the calculator.
